Lineage / Hybridizer History: Sweet Melissa was bred by Tony Lague, an passionate hybridizer based in Cape Town. The plant was created through a deliberate, cross-pollination design combining Aji Melocoton and a rare, purple-flowered baccatum. While Aji Melocoton provides the foundational peach-orange coloration and tropical flavor profile, the purple-flowered parent introduced striking anthocyanin coloration and unique floral traits. Currently, the lineage is being grown and stabilized over successive ggenerations and is F5 As a result of this careful selection process, the unique traits of both parents are beautifully expressed in this exceptional hybrid.

Heat Profile

Scoville Rating (SHU):
Estimated between 10,000 and 30,000 SHU.

Perceived Heat:
Medium (1000 to 15000 SHU) to Hot (15000 to 50000 SHU), depending on growing conditions and ripeness.

Heat Characteristics:

A smooth, warm pungency is delivered by Sweet Melissa, which is characteristically centered at the back of the mouth and throat. This gentle burn is driven by its

Capsicum baccatum genetics, which ensure that the sharp, aggressive front-tongue sting common to other species is entirely avoided. Initially, the heat builds up gradually, allowing the complex sugars to satisfy the palate before a pleasant, lingering warmth spreads. Ultimately, the sensation fades cleanly, leaving a comfortable glow without overwhelming the senses.

Flavor Profile

Tasting Notes:
Aji Melocoton delivers a bright, tropical flavor reminiscent of stone fruits, particularly peach and apricot. The sweetness is immediate and pronounced, followed by subtle floral undertones and a crisp vegetal finish.

Aftertaste / Finish:
An explosion of sweet, tropical fruitiness is experienced when biting into this pepper. Dominant notes of ripe peach and juicy apricot are immediately detected, inheriting these traits directly from its Peruvian parentage. Furthermore, a crisp, refreshing sweetness is beautifully balanced by a delicate citrus zest, giving the pod a highly complex flavor profile.

Ideal Pairings:

    • Fresh summer mango or pineapple salsas

    • Lacto-fermented artisanal hot sauces
    • Sweet and spicy fruit chutneys or jams
    • Lightly grilled poultry and glazed pork dishes
    • Traditional citrus-heavy ceviche or fresh seafood garnishes

Fruit Characteristics

Shape:
The pods are elongated, elegant, and pendant-shaped, slightly tapering toward a blunt point, showing occasional gentle wrinkling or puckering near the stem end.

Size:
4–6 cm long, 1.5–2 cm diameter.

Color Stages:
Immature: white → creamy → pink → Ripe: peach-orange.

Wall Thickness:
Medium

Texture & Skin: The skin is smooth, glossy, and remarkably firm, which provides a highly satisfying, crisp crunch when the pepper is consumed fresh from the vine.

Plant Details

Growth Habit:
The plant exhibits a tall, open, and wiry growth habit that is typical of South American baccatum varieties. Because the branches can become quite stretchy and heavy with fruit, structural support or staking is highly recommended to prevent breakage.

Plant Height & Width:
Height: 100–120 cm
Width: 60–80 cm

Foliage:
Dark green, slightly pubescent

Flower Color:
Vibrant purple petals adorned with striking purple margins and classic greenish-yellow markings near the center of the corolla.

Days to Maturity:
Approximately 90–110 days from transplant

Yield:
High – capable of producing dozens of pods per plant under optimal conditions.

Cultivation Information

Seed Count per Pack:
5 or 10 seeds (Presoaking Chilli Seeds)

Germination Time:
7–14 days (Germinating Chilli Seeds)

Optimal Germination Temp:
25–30°C (Essential guide to ideal temperatures and humidity for chilli seed germination)

Light Requirements:
Filtered sun

Soil Preferences:
Prefers well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8, enriched with organic matter (Easy DIY soil mixes)

Storage Tips:
Store seeds in a cool, dry place in airtight containers. Refrigeration is recommended for long-term viability.

Notable Compounds

Capsaicinoid Content:
Primarily capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin, contributing to its medium heat profile.

Volatile Flavor Compounds:
Limonene and trace esters may be present, enhancing its fruity aroma. While vanillin is not dominant, subtle sweet notes suggest esterification during ripening.

Anthocyanins / Pigments:
No significant purple pigmentation; however, the transition from creamy to peach may involve carotenoid accumulation, particularly beta-carotene.

Culinary & Cultural Use

Traditional Uses:

  • Ají sauces and fruit-based salsas
  • Sweet and spicy chutneys
  • Marinades for poultry and seafood
  • Garnishes for ceviche and grilled vegetables

Raw vs Cooked Flavor:
Raw pods offer a crisp texture and bright sweetness. When cooked, especially grilled or roasted, the flavor deepens and becomes more complex, with caramelized sugars and smoky undertones. Pickling preserves the fruitiness while mellowing the heat.

Regional Dishes:

  • Peruvian ají de fruta (fruit-based chili sauce)
  • Caribbean-style peach salsa
  • South American stir-fried vegetable medleys
  • Sweet chili jam with tropical fruit infusions

Storage / Drying / Preserving Tips:
Drying should be done in low-humidity environments to preserve color and flavor. Thin walls allow for efficient air-drying or dehydrator use. Fermentation enhances complexity; pods can be lacto-fermented with fruit for a tangy relish. Freezing is also effective for short-term preservation without flavor loss.
